Many lessons learned by spending time on a vessel like “Vela” can be brought ashore and applied to our every day lives ashore.
The size of our environment on board makes us think in a new way about how we relate to our much larger environment ashore. On a boat resources are strikingly finite: water, food, energy, space, communications, access to “entertainment” and almost anything else you can think of.
Our interaction with the macro environment of our planet is brought much more to the front of our consciousness: wind, rain, sun, heat, cold, pollution, and contamination by discarded materials
